Why Radio Stands Out To Me

From road trips to late night drives, radio has been my constant companion through it all. If there is one thing that radio taught me, it’s that music changed my life. My passion for radio comes from my deep passion for music. Without a doubt, it speaks to my soul and can translate complex emotions into simple ones, and simple ones into complex ones. Sometimes when I listen to a song I haven’t listened to in a while, it transports me back to how my life was like when I first heard that song, and reminds me of forgotten memories. I think it's magical how something as simple as soundwaves have the power to invoke such heavy and human emotions. Long story short, when I heard about the radio industry, I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about it.

Coming from a small town, all of the folks there had big hearts and an even bigger passion for music. You could say that music was the glue that bound our little community together. I swear, my town had more Tragically Hip fans per capita than blades of grass. When you live in a place like this, it’s so easy to feel connected to those around you. I know for a fact that I wouldn't have felt that connection if it weren’t for radio, specifically 92.9 The Grand. 92.9 The Grand plays the greatest hits of all time, and supplied the music of my childhood and adolescence. It was the station that was played 24/7 in our one and only grocery store and the heart of the town; the hockey arena. It was the station that fueled my town’s soul, and if there was one station to be given the title of the Cayuga’s radio station, it would without a doubt be 92.9.
Another reason I am passionate about radio is because of the technology behind it. I am fascinated about how radio works, and it boggles my mind that something like this could exist.

I love how it has the ability to be there for people and comfort them in lonely times. I know from firsthand experience that If I had no one around and wanted to feel less alone, the radio was a good option for that. There have been times late at night when I was driving home from school or coming home from hockey practice, where the world felt still and quiet and lonely. Turning on the radio was like my beacon of light in the night, and made driving home on the dark country roads so much more enjoyable.
One day, I hope to be that source of comfort for other people. Whether it’s someone who just had the best day of their life, or the worst. A young person, or an old person. I hope I can be someone who’s there for people the way the radio was for me.
I am excited to continue my learning and grow my skills.
