Music is powerful. It’s an art, an expression. It reaches parts of us we don’t know how to get to. Upon really diving deep into the expansive array of music out there at about thirteen years old, it opened my eyes to an entire new world of emotion and experience. I began listening to everything I could get my hands on, I just wanted more and more songs in my library. I collected CD’s, Cassettes and Vinyl's, and have been ever since.
It was there for me in my toughest times, happiest times, and ambiguous times. It brought colour to dull moments and helped me to connect with deep emotions.

It made such an impact on my life that it also helped me choose my career path. When I picking out a school, I realized I had no clue what I wanted to go into. Everything I applied to was different. I applied to Sault College for their Fish and Wildlife program, Thunder Bay for Outdoor Recreation, Algonquian for Outdoor Adventure, and Mohawk for Radio and Creative Content. I figured since I was feeling so directionless, I would just go to whichever program accepted me. Unfortunately, I got into all of them. I'm kidding about the unfortunate, although it did make my decision harder. So I got to thinking, what is the one thing that I’m passionate about every single day? Music. And Radio and Creative Content was the closest thing to it. I accepted my offer with no regrets since!
I go out of my way to try and listen to music from every genre and decade, and I’ve narrowed three artists that I think you guys at home would find very interesting!
Mazzy Star!
I’d recommend this band to folks who enjoy melancholy, dreamy, shoegaze music. Originating in 1988, they were a 90’s sensation and created a pretty hefty following for themselves. Their most famous song, “Fade into you”, is a song I can admit without shame is my favourite one, it clearly became famous for a reason. They are classified as alternative rock, and they have an incredibly unique and powerful sound that transports you somewhere deep inside yourself. I’d recommend them to anyone out there who enjoys poetry.

The Lowest of The Low!
Also from the 90’s, The Lowest of The Low is one of my all-time favorites. They are an alternative rock group based in Toronto, Canada, and as far as Canadian music goes, they had a big influence on other artists also involved in alternative music. I listened to them a lot in my childhood, specifically their “Shakespeare my Butt!” album. To me, they sound like living life to the fullest, creating experiences, and feeling your feelings. They make beautiful music, and their lyrics offer interesting perspectives. If I could only listen to three songs by them for the rest of my life, I’d pick Rosy and Grey, Bleed a little while tonight, and Subversives. I just recently saw them play in Hamilton, and they were fantastic live.
The Smashing Pumpkins!
If you're into more loud music, something a little more grunge or progressive, I’d one hundred percent recommend The Smashing Pumpkins! No suprise, this is also a 90’s band (are you noticing a trend?) This iconic rock group creates a nostalgic feel of a simpler time, of being young and navigating life. They've got a song for everyone. My favourite song of theirs is 1979, off the album Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
All in all, I love music, and I just can’t get enough. If you want to hear more of my thoughts, I’ll definitely blog about more good music in the future!
